In Memorium: Lavone Barnett-Seetal

It is with the heaviest of hearts we share with you that Lavone Barnett-Seetal lost her battle with cancer on December 17, 2020.

Within our community, she was best known for directing the APU Gospel Choir. During her tenure she developed the group into a significant and authentic gospel vocal ensemble, one that attracted an ever-increasing number of students from across the campus. Her deep faith combined with consummate musical skills and unbridled joy in communicating both the music and the message were a perfect combination, one that profoundly resonated with her students.

Outside of APU, Lavone pursued a successful career as a professional vocalist. Most recently, she toured with rock legend, John Fogerty, and recently received a nomination for a GRAMMY Award for her work with Freedom Heartsong, in the Best R&B duo category. To those fortunate enough to call her colleague and friend, she was bigger than life. Her personality, her smile, and most of all her infectious booming laugh made her instantly recognizable. It was not possible to be in her company and keep from feeling that joy. Lavone possessed a deep sense of caring for others. She was always ready with a word of encouragement for anyone, be it students, staff, or faculty. She will be profoundly missed by all who were blessed to know her.

We hope Heaven is ready for her!
