APU’s School of Education Launches Innovative Stand-Alone MAEd Program
To fit the evolving needs of educators, APU’s School of Education launched a Master of Arts in Education program tailored for full-time working professionals. Students can complete all 30 units in just one year, saving time and money compared to traditional MAEd programs.

APU’s MA in Education is a 30-unit, one-year graduate program for working professionals. Complete eight courses plus a master’s thesis across five eight-week terms, with most coursework completed online, plus two in-person residencies to foster community and collaboration.

To be considered for admission to the MA in Education program, applicants must meet APU’s general graduate admission requirements. No teaching credential is required.

- instructors, collegiate coaches, and industry professionals looking to deepen their education expertise and effectiveness; and

Scholarships and Grants
Scholarships and grants are considered gift aid, meaning they do not require repayment. These awards may come from federal, state, institutional, or private sources. Scholarships are often merit-based and awarded for academic achievement, leadership, or other demonstrated talents.
While APU does award scholarships, you can also find external scholarship opportunities through websites such as Finaid and Fastweb. Contact the Student Services Center about scholarships offered through APU departments or local organizations.
Student Employment
Along with gift aid and student loans, you can apply for on-campus student employment opportunities to earn additional income to pay for education-related expenses. As an APU student, you can also find work off campus in the surrounding community.

The MA in Education program is offered in a hybrid, low-residency format featuring select in-person residency days alongside online asynchronous coursework and online synchronous support events.
Program Format
- Online Asynchronous Classes: Complete coursework on your own schedule. The asynchronous nature of the program’s courses allows students to prioritize their education in a way that works with their professional lifestyle.
- Online Synchronous Support Events: Faculty host designated office hours, online workshops, and pop-up community-building events so students can connect with their cohort and professors in a personalized way.
- In-Person Residency Days:
- Residency 1 (Term 1): Held at the Azusa campus. Students build community with peers and faculty and begin diving into the curriculum.
- Residency 2 (Final Term): Formal research presentation and dinner with students and faculty. Hooding ceremony before graduates walk at APU’s commencement.

You may take up to 8 units per eight-week term, which includes a maximum of two education courses.
At Azusa Pacific, each term consists of two sessions (Fall I and Fall II, Spring I and Spring II), and each session is eight weeks.

Each class requires you to meet for approximately five hours once a week.
Since most of our students are working professionals with busy schedules and family lives, we keep the MAEd program flexible. That means you have to attend class only one night per week for eight weeks.
Yes, APU’s MA in Education culminates in a traditional master’s thesis. You’ll conduct original research in an area of educational interest, guided by APU faculty, and produce a scholarly work that deepens your expertise while making a meaningful contribution to the field.
