Registering for classes is quick and simple through online registration, located at home.apu.edu. Complete your registration online, immediately see whether there is room in a class, and receive instant registration confirmation.

To register or add/drop classes for a session online, do the following:

• Using any web browser, go to: apu.edu and click home.apu.edu at the top of the home page or go directly to home.apu.edu.
• Log on using your APU Net ID and password.
• Click “Enroll” under the Academics heading.
• Follow the simple steps.

Academic Advising

Academic advising is suggested for all students. Some programs require that this be completed prior to admission and/or registration of classes. Please contact the department for specific guidelines in this area.

Viewing Your Academic Requirements Report

Students can keep track of academic progress by viewing the Academic Requirements Report at home.apu.edu.

Navigating to Your Academic Requirements Report

1. Sign in to your account at home.apu.edu.
2. Using the dashboard menu, navigate to either the “Enrollment” or “Academics” menu item, and click the plus sign to expand the menu options.
3. Select “Academic Requirements,” and the Academic Requirements panel will appear.
4. Click the plus sign next to your program name to display the completed and uncompleted requirements for your degree program.
5. For each requirement, clicking the plus sign will reveal additional details along with a button link to view courses that will fulfill the given requirement.

Registration Dates

Students may register for fall, fall 1, and fall 2 sessions (summer and spring terms respectively) at the same time. Consult the Academic Calendar for registration dates and deadlines. For those receiving financial aid or deferring loans, students are strongly encouraged to register for all sessions within the same term.

Online registration is not available for certain programs or courses. Students in these programs or courses must complete a paper registration form. Contact the Student Services Center (SSC) for more information about the registration process for the following programs or courses:

Please Note:Class offerings can change on a daily basis. For information regarding classes not listed within Enroll or Class Search and not mentioned below, please contact your academic department.

If an independent study, course tutorial, directed research, capstone project, etc., will be one of your class choices, please register online for all of your other classes and then submit an (File Not Found) to the Student Services Center (SSC) before the “Last Day to Add/Drop.” Forms are only available online.

You are not required to take the ALEKS assessment if:

1. You have completed and submitted IGETC or CSU breadth full certification which satisfies the quantitative literacy GE, or
2. You have completed and submitted proof of an ADN and will be completing the RN to BSN program. The ADN satisfies the quantitative literacy GE, or
3. You transfer in the math course(s) required for your major with a minimum grade of C (see table below), or
4. You have completed the college-level prerequisite(s) (as verified by a transcript) for any math course(s) required for your major that you are not transferring in (see table below).

You are required to take the ALEKS assessment if you do not fall into any of the four categories listed above.

Professional students who need to take PRMA 110, PRMA 130, or UNRS 299 and lack the course prerequisites indicated above must use ALEKS in order to demonstrate preparedness to take these courses. The required ALEKS scores are indicated in the following table.

ALEKS Score Required to Enroll

Students who need to use ALEKS are strongly encouraged to take an initial assessment at home as soon as possible. If necessary, they will then be able to review using their Prep and Learning Module and then retake the ALEKS assessment up to four times. Only the highest score counts.

The information below is for professional undergraduate students at APU’s regional campuses. Traditional undergraduate students at the Azusa campus can find math placement assessment information through the Academic Success Center’s Testing Services.

APU helps you to strengthen your mathematics skills even before you start your program by providing a 6-month subscription to ALEKS PPL (Assessment and Learning in Knowledge Spaces—Placement, Preparation, Learning) software to all incoming students who have not already completed their math requirements. ALEKS assesses your current skill level, tailors an adaptive online learning experience to your personal strengths and weaknesses, and then allows you to take the assessment again (up to four times, if you desire) in order to determine the best math course placement for you. ALEKS is designed to set you up for success.

The ALEKS process consists of the following steps:

1. Determine whether you are required to use ALEKS
2. Take your first ALEKS assessment at home as soon as possible
3. Choose and use a Prep and Learning Module
4. Retake the ALEKS assessment up to four times to attempt to raise your score

Should I study before I begin to use ALEKS?

No, just dive right in and take your initial ALEKS assessment as soon as you can! Then use the Prep and Learning Module to review and to learn new material.

How long does an ALEKS assessment take?

An assessment typically takes 60-120 minutes. Students have up to two hours to complete an assessment. Finish and submit your work before two hours are up in order to receive an assessment score."

What topics are covered by the ALEKS assessment?

The ALEKS assessment covers a variety of topics from high school mathematics:

• Real numbers (including fractions, integers, and percentages)
• Equations and inequalities (including linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of linear equations, and quadratic equations
• Linear and quadratic functions (including graphs and functions, linear functions, and parabolas)
• Rational expressions (including rational equations and rational functions)
• Radical expressions (including higher roots and rational exponents)
• Exponentials and logarithms (including function compositions and inverse functions, properties of logarithms, and logarithmic equations)
• Geometry and trigonometry (including perimeter, area, volume, coordinate geometry, trigonometric functions, and identities and equations)

What is the format of the questions on the ALEKS assessment?

ALEKS questions are open-response (not multiple choice) and require you to work out solutions with a paper and pencil and then enter them into ALEKS. Before you begin an assessment, a tutorial will show you how to enter your answers.

Can I review a question after I've answered it?

Because ALEKS is adaptive, once you submit an answer, you cannot change it. Be sure to carefully check your answer before submitting your response.

What resources may I use during an ALEKS assessment?

You may only use a writing instrument and paper. ALEKS will provide an on-screen calculator if you need one to complete a particular problem. You may not use any other calculator.

How long is my placement result valid?

ALEKS placement scores expire after one year, to ensure that they reflect students’ current preparation level. You are expected to enroll in a math course within one year of completing your assessment (unless you have already completed all of your math requirements).

Do I have to pay for ALEKS?

No, APU covers the full cost of an ALEKS subscription for all new students.

What are ALEKS Knowledge Checks?

While working in your Prep and Learning Module, you will periodically complete a Knowledge Check assessment to make sure you have retained your mastery of the topics you have studied in Learning Mode. If you do not show mastery during the Knowledge Check, the topics will be added back into your Learning Pie so you can review them again. Knowledge Checks do not count for placement purposes; their purpose is simply to make the Learning Mode as effective as possible.

All assessments will be recorded and reviewed using online proctoring software. Be sure not to use any external calculator or other resources while taking the ALEKS assessment. An artificially inflated score will only place you into a math class for which you are not adequately prepared. Any use of unauthorized resources will qualify as an academic integrity violation.

The first time you take an ALEKS assessment, you will be guided to install Respondus LockDown Browser on your computer to facilitate the online proctoring. You will also need to use a computer with a webcam and a microphone, and you will need a photo ID. If you do not have these requirements for online proctoring, then you may schedule an in-person proctoring session through APU’s Testing Services or at a distance proctoring site.

The Prep and Learning Module provides an efficient way to do targeted review of the particular topics just beyond the boundary of your current understanding. You are required to use the Prep and Learning Module for at least three hours prior to retaking the ALEKS assessment. A majority of APU students who have worked with the Prep and Learning Module have been able to significantly raise their initial scores. We recommend that all students required to use ALEKS spend up to 20 hours working in their Prep and Learning Module to prepare for success in their math class(es).

Prep and Learning Pie

Your Prep and Learning Pie will help to monitor and guide your learning. Topics are visually grouped into various pie “slices.” Under each slice, ALEKS will give you several topics from which you can choose to continue your learning.

Progress in your Prep and Learning Module does not count for placement purposes, but will very likely help you score higher when you retake the ALEKS assessment. Knowledge Checks After you work in your Prep and Learning Module for a certain number of hours, or demonstrate mastery of a certain number of new topics, ALEKS will give you an assessment within Prep and Learning Mode called a “Knowledge Check” or a “Progress Assessment.” This assessment usually contains 20 questions focused on the topics you have recently studied, and does not count for placement purposes; the purpose of this assessment is to solidify the new topics you have learned in your long-term memory.

If you do not confirm mastery of a topic during the Knowledge Check, the topic will be added back into your Prep and Learning Pie so that you will be able to review it again.

Knowledge Checks

After you work in your Prep and Learning Module for a certain number of hours, or demonstrate mastery of a certain number of new topics, ALEKS will give you an assessment within Prep and Learning Mode called a “Knowledge Check” or a “Progress Assessment.” This assessment usually contains 20 questions focused on the topics you have recently studied, and does not count for placement purposes; the purpose of this assessment is to solidify the new topics you have learned in your long-term memory.

If you do not confirm mastery of a topic during the Knowledge Check, the topic will be added back into your Prep and Learning Pie so that you will be able to review it again.

Students with access to a computer with a webcam and microphone are encouraged to take the ALEKS assessment at home using the built-in online proctoring. Alternatively, you may schedule an ALEKS proctoring appointment through APU’s Testing Services in Azusa.

Schedule a Proctoring Appointment at the LEC

You may schedule an ALEKS proctoring appointment through APU’s Testing Services using our online scheduling system. If you have questions about scheduling, you may call Testing Services at (626) 815-3849. All exams must be scheduled 24 hours in advance. Testing Services proctors exams 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday year-round. There is no proctoring fee for students who take ALEKS through Testing Services.
