Biography

Patricia “Trish” Hanes, PhD, has been with APU’s School of Nursing since 1992. She has been a registered nurse since 1974 and has clinical expertise in critical care and emergency nursing, with additional experience in triage and prehospital care. She has an interest in disaster health and emergency management, nursing history, face-to-face and online curriculum development, program planning, and mentoring. As a longtime lead teacher of the writing intensive course in the major, she is committed to fostering better student writing and research. Her research interests include disaster topics (wildfires), historical research methods, adult education, cognition, mentoring, and teaching/facilitative strategies She has published and presented her scholarship in numerous international, national, and regional venues.

Hanes has developed the programs and curricula for nursing education, and courses for disaster nursing and disaster health/emergency preparedness. She frequently teaches community courses related to disasters and participates in disaster drills with students.

Hanes’ dissertation involved researching a new construct, composite cognition, as it relates to the teaching/training of military combat nurses. Hanes is a past moderator of the APU Faculty Senate, and was president of the California League for Nursing, an ambassador for the National League for Nursing, and vice president of the Independent California College and University Faculty Association. She currently sits on the board of a local hospital system.
